Dansville- Irene E. Holbrook age 97, passed away early Sunday afternoon July 19, 2015, at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mt. Morris, where she had been a resident for the past several years. She was born in the Town of Sparta on October 18, 1917, a daughter of the late Guy and Jessie (Hartman) Smith. On March 3, 1943, she was married to Albert Holbrook, who predeceased her on November 28, 1989. She was also predeceased by a sister Louise Holbrook, and her brother's in-law Robert Holbrook and Gerald Freeman. Irene was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dansville. She was a member and past matron of the Deborah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was employed as a bookkeeper at the former Owen's Brother's Trucking Company in Dansville. She was also the Secretary to the Superintendent and District Treasurer for the Dansville Central School many years ago. She was a member of the "Splash Master's Art Club and had received several awards for her paintings. In her free time she enjoyed painting on canvas. Many pieces of her artwork are still on display at homes throughout the Dansville area. She is survived by a sister, Edna Freeman of Mt. Morris, her nephews, Kenneth (Laurie) Holbrook, Guy (June) Holbrook, Gerald (Linda) Freeman Jr, Gary (Jill) Freeman, Raymond (Nancy) Freeman and Edward (Marsha) Freeman, and several great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St., Dansville, Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery in Dansville.
